How to Raise Awareness During Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to open our hearts, share our stories, give ourselves grace if our lives have been impacted, and spread hope to those who might be silently struggling. At Mental Skincare, we know firsthand how mental health challenges can impact our lives and the lives of those we love. The loss of Erynne's mother to suicide was a turning point that inspired our mission to not only raise awareness but also to offer support. This month is dedicated to reminding each and every one of you that your life matters, your struggles are valid, you are worthy, and most importantly… you are not alone.
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Everything counts. Prevention starts with awareness, empathy, and real conversations. If you or someone you know is going through a tough time, the most important step is reaching out, even if it's just to sit in silence. Isolation often feeds the darkness, and allows you to remain in a hole… so never hesitate to connect with a friend, a loved one, or a mental health professional. Its never easy but talking about your feelings can be a lifesaver.
Understanding the Warning Signs
One of the most crucial aspects of suicide prevention is recognizing the warning signs. Some people may show outward signs like withdrawal from social activities, mood swings, or talking about feeling hopeless. Others may keep their struggles more hidden. The key is to observe, listen and pay attention. If someone you know is acting differently, don’t ignore it. Don't be afraid to ask how they’re feeling and offer your support. Even the smallest act of kindness can make a huge difference.
How You Can Help
Becoming an advocate for suicide prevention doesn’t require special skills—just an open heart and the willingness to listen. Encourage those in your life to seek help if they need it. Let them know it’s okay to not be okay. Heres the thing, we are all human, our emotions are valid and dont need to be kept hidden from the world. Share resources, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline & the With Hope Foundation, and let people know that help is always available and often just a phone call away.
Prioritizing Self-Care
Taking care of your own mental health is also a critical part of suicide prevention. Life can be overwhelming at times, (we get it!) but self-care is an important tool in managing stress, mindset and emotions. At Mental Skincare, we believe in the power of small acts of kindness towards yourself. Whether it’s setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, or even something as simple as swiping on our hydrating lip gloss—every little bit of self-love helps.
During Suicide Prevention Month, let's remind each other that healing is possible, its ok to struggle, and hope is always within reach. Together, we can make a difference and save lives.
